Baldurs Gate 3 is celebrated for its intricate world-building, where even seemingly useless items hidden in the wilderness can be combined into formidable gear. One such item is the Head of a Broken Spear, a piece of scrap metal that holds the key to forging a unique weapon early in the game. Knowing exactly where to locate this component and how to use it can give your party a distinct advantage during the opening act of your adventure.
Finding the Head of a Broken Spear
To acquire the Head of a Broken Spear, players must venture into the dangerous Owlbear Nest located in the forest west of the Emerald Grove. Inside the cavern, you will confront a massive adult Owlbear protecting its cub in a challenging early-game battle. Defeating the mother allows you to search her corpse, where you will find the spearhead lodged deep within her flesh.
If you prefer a non-violent alternative, you can choose to leave the mother alive during your first encounter and return to the cave after a long rest. Goblins will eventually raid the nest and eliminate the beast for you, allowing you to salvage the item safely. Regardless of the method chosen, looting the body guarantees the recovery of this essential crafting component.
Locating the Missing Shaft Piece
To make use of the spearhead, players must first track down the matching half known as the Shaft of a Broken Spear. This piece is located nearby on the body of True Soul Edowin, a dying dwarf cultist resting in the forest at coordinates X:136 Y:446. You will need to interact with his companions, Bryna and Andrick, before you can freely search his remains.
Looting Edowin will yield both a valuable Mind Flayer parasite specimen and the broken wooden handle needed for the weapon. Gathering this piece is highly recommended before advancing too far into the wilderness, as missing it can lock you out of a powerful upgrade opportunity. Once both halves are safely tucked away in your inventory, you are ready to assemble the artifact.
Forging the Vision of the Absolute
Crafting the completed weapon does not require a blacksmith forge or a specialized crafting station. You simply need to open your inventory screen, right-click either the spearhead or the shaft, and select the combine option. Merging the two broken pieces automatically transforms them into a rare uncommon weapon called the Vision of the Absolute.
This unique spear is exceptionally potent during the early portions of the game, offering a special feature that can blind targets upon a failed saving throw. Furthermore, it deals an extra 2d6 piercing damage against creatures that possess multiple sets of eyes. This bonus damage makes the spear incredibly effective when fighting the swarms of spiders dwelling beneath the Blighted Village.
